4. Describe an event in the world that has impacted you this year. How? Why?
oh goodness it seems like (and likely a perception issue because global news) erverything is terrible and getting worse
record year for heat
record year for fires
record year for storms
cops still killing people with no repercussions
cops failing to go after the school shooter in uvale
CVOID killing people daily but everyone stopped caring
polio is back!
Russia attacking / war with Ukraine
inflation, recession
The women of iran standing up for the death of women at the hands of morality police and many more being killed
t***p and his cultists are still doing illegal things without punishment
I am glad i don't have children
I am overwhelmed, saddened by everything, i feel powerless, i guess hope is dead

3. Think about a major milestone that happened with your family this past year. How has this affected you?
3. Think about a major milestone that happened with your family this past year. How has this affected you?
Someone close turned out to not be who we thought, sister still very ill, sister now has SO with child who is sweet. not really any major milestones? i mean maybe mom's first trip abroad since she was young (italy with my spouse and myself)
family stuff hasn't impacted me b/c my parents are wonderful about keeping their trouble theirs

2. Is there something that you wish you had done differently this past year? Alternatively, is there something you're especially proud of from this past year?
There are things i wish that had gone different, like having more staff so i was not so overworked and exhausted running TDIPerhaps i wonder if I had not replied to that message... as of a week from now one issue would have been resolved would things really have gotten better? i would have had more flexibility and kept the time shift
i am prod we didn't have superspreaders at the wedding and TDI
i failed to exercise and lose weight and be healthier *sigh*

1. Describe a significant experience that has happened in the past year. How did it affect you? Are you grateful? Relieved? Resentful? Inspired?
I got a new job, not thrilled over it, lost unlimited PTO and such but I do like the people and the potential. We'll see.
Finally had the much delayed wedding, it was WONDERFUL I hope everyone had as grand a time as we did.
Visited Alaska, glad to see it, don't need to see it again. I have now seen every US state.
I ended up with COVID, from the Alaska honeymoon cruise, we had done so well for so long. Partner still avoided it (yay!). after avoiding it through hacker summer camp and everything.
we got kittens! We got a bunny! a flemmish giant i have wanted one so very long - Jett & Knight = cats, Jack=rabbit I love them
didn't work out quite how i planned - pepper passed (i put him down, something behind his eye), then jack needed a home, i wanted a baby but he needed us, so he was nearly 10 months and skittish and a rough upbringing. so not cuddly. also not a pair. got the kittens soon after and it took a bit but they all bonded, they drive one another crazy time to time but mostly get on well. they regularly destroy or ruin things, frustrating partner, who then fixes, but i love them.
went to italy with my mom and franco and morgan and my partner and it was lovely, it was the wrong part of italy for canooli but we learned to make pasta and tiramisu and had great lattes every day it was wonderful
i am grateful i got to see italy, have an amazing wedding, have seen all the us states
My bee.net email went away, end of an era
TDI hosted a virtual and in person event, i was so exhausted and busy i can't keep doing it we need more staff, one more year and if things don't get better i have to leave
Someone i thought was a good person is actually abusive
and money causes people to do things, that are unreasonable and unloving

Jul. 7th, 2022 06:28 pmSo you need to do hacker summer camp on the cheap - some advice
I assume you have read https://sites.google.com/site/amazonv/first-conference?authuser=0
and https://hackersummercamp.guide/
next up
i won't cover getting there, tons of sites on that
so you are there
Pack
Water bottle (that can handle hot water for tea)
laundry pods or strips
maybe a plastic bowl and silverwear (or thift whatever)
maybe a water heater (can use coffee maker in many rooms)
flask & funnel
comfy backpack
comfy shoes
Carry on only
you can do laundry at some hotels (like tuscany!) inexpensively, you need US quarters and soap - pack some pods or strips in a ziplock in your luggage! now you can do carry on (it needs to be in your liquids thing) also it's hot if you have light clothes you can dry them out without paying for the dryer
you do NOT want to pay for their laundry soap so expensive
Also a lot of events have / sell shirts - and if you volunteer or speak you may get one, or maybe you plan to buy one (budget for it) but you may not need as many shirts as you thought
Hotel
Shop around for a cheap room
check if you can use the monorail or bus to get from the hotel to event
if you need to taxi, factor that in, you also then need to carry everything with you always, better if you can walk or monorail!
walking in vegas is hot more than 10-15 min sucks, avoid it.
don't forget to include the back and forth of the transport against the price of the hotel
also consider finding out who locally is going, make a friend, have a roomie and split the bill (i have done it!)
Food
pay for the taxi to go to a grocery store on arrival, not the on strip hotel or convenience stores
grab food you don't need to refrigerate! (unless you luck out and are in the tuscany or something and have a fridge) - i recommend if you have a water heater in the room (or pack a camping one!) oatmeal or cereal with powdered milk.
think of it like camping.
You can often use the coffee machine to just heat the water for soup, oatmeal etc.
get creative - i like soylent and mix single servings in water in a shaker bottle
you can pickup a cheap bowl and silverwear at the dollar store - reusable is cheaper and wash it in the sink
ok let's assume you purchased breakfast, and snacks
how hungry do you get, can you snack (nuts, etc.) and just do one large dinner? i can, some can't - if you have to buy lunch you are stuck, htels have you - look for grab and go food courts for best price value and speed
ok now it's dinner
get off the strip! cheaper and better food
or go all in on a buffet if you can get your money's worth
don't drink
what?
yeah don't drink (alcohol)
unless you can buy a bottle and pack a flask, the prices in vegas are high, stick to the free water or buy gallons (have a water bottle! buy a few gallons of water!)
or find vendor parties - get in and get free drinks
good youtubes to find free or cheap activities and food
https://www.youtube.com/c/TravelRuby
Example shopping list for me: (1 week in vegas)
-red bull
-scotch
-trail mix / nuts / granola
-protein bars
-soylent / meal powder = lunch
-oatmeal, instant = or cereal not both
-bread (muffins, croissant)
-2 gallons of water
-tea (dry)
-powdered milk
-jerky
things i have done in the past but don't anymore
PB
bread
apples (cutting the apples was hard)
honey
fluff
make sandwiches!
you can also buy single serve tuna now, but it's messy to snack / make sandwich with but maybe you will have better luck

Jun. 20th, 2022 06:28 pmI am disappointed by the way people behave around incidents anymore
Over the weekend there was an incident at BSides Cleveland
The event had a person who has been barred from another event as a speaker, but had them listed as "special guest speaker" and obfuscated who it was
Speakers, after the special guest speaker, reacted by pulling their talks (I support this)
Some attendees asked for accountability (I support this)
What I am disappointed by
What I don't support is the very rapid demand that the event immediately provide a full apology and root cause analysis (RCA), and/or remove all organizers, and the "parent" organization (which is a loose parent org, much like a fraternity or sorority office that can de-associate a chapter but doesn't have direct control to disband the thing itself just remove it's name) immediately make a statement and take action, and that sponsors immediately respond and take action.
Why?
first, yes the event should recognize they need to do IR and RCA, but true apologies need to apologize for something specific and detail how they will prevent future occurrences. by demanding and rushing the "outcome" people lack knowledge of exactly what did happen, who knew what when, and the opportunity for a thoughtful outcome.
these events are volunteers, overworked, and chaos - is this an excuse for what happened, no. it is saying you need to give chaotic groups a chance to figure out what happened? who knew? was it everyone? was it a few people?
Next, sponsors often do not know event specifics, asking them to respond immediately is unfair, i think asking them to respond and giving them time would be fair, also likely their money is already spent they aren't getting it back. ask them to please make a statement and give them time to look at what happened, and let them make it.
finally, by saying the speakers who pulled did the right thing you potentially are punishing or thinking poorly of the speakers who went before, or who were unaware why the special guest was controversial (not everyone keeps up with our missing stairs and bad actors in the community). We should thank those who did step down but don't say thats what speakers have to do.
so, do i think what happened was right? no do i think it needed a IR yes. IMO did it need an apology and actions, yes - and there was.
the organizer stepped down, they are seeking new organizers and the main group is going to help it recover if it wants to and new organizers step up.
but as an all volunteer community, people do need to step up.
I am not against accountability, but we are too fast to demand a solution and an outcome, IMO, we need to demand they (sponsor, speakers, event, orgs) agree to do RCA and then respond, and in a timely manner, but with all volunteer orgs perhaps getting a commitment to respond in the next 5 days or 7 days would have been kinder and allowed for a more thoughtful and honest apology and RCA and next steps?
On to the next issues
Should a con be able to give someone banned from another con a speaking slot
Yes. I think they should strongly consider the history of the con and how often they ban people however, and proceed with more caution but I wouldn't say it should prevent someone from other events but it should act as an indicator to be thoughtful.
There could be cases where a person fucked up, owns it, and IMPROVES themselves, i feel we do need to be better about making room for redemption i our community and online. However, the accountability should be on the person to show, over and over for a long time that they did understand what they did, and they are working to improve. Redemption is not fast. not everyone earns or deserves to be trusted again. There is risk in giving people a second chance and i think it should be done slowly and thoughtfully as we have seen there are plenty of people out there who do NOT take the time to understand, learn from, apologize for, and grow away from their past mistakes. At the same time just because it could be abused it not a reason to say "never!" In this particular case i have seen none of the requested actions and in fact the talk was the opposite of those, as such I don't think this applies to this event, but event organizers i would not fault for giving a second chance to people (but even his abstract should have been a red flag in this case IMO).
Should sponsors be held accountable for events at conferences?
Not directly IMO - unless an RCA says otherwise the sponsors should be assumed to have little control after they sign their sponsor contract, however asking them for a statement is fair (and they could choose to just say they are disappointed etc) - warning this could mean if the leadership of an event changes, you have harmed that event from proceeding in the future as sponsors are hard to come by.
If on the other hand the sponsors are found to be supportive or influential on whatever the issue at debate is, asking for an apology and follow on action i think would be fair.
Event Leadership
If the leadership in an RCA is found to be knowledgeable or neglegent they should step down and help transition to new leadership.
unlike paid events however there is a chance everyone is wearing a lot of hats, they delegated and i do not think the buck should stop with them if it was a subset of bad actors on staff or volunteers, they should remove those staff or volunteers and indicate how they plan to better staff the next year so more attention can be given by leadership.
Note unless the locals volunteer and support this is a risk.
Should a parent org be responsible?
They should be given a chance to review the IR/RCA (or force the IR/RCA) and should then consider whether the outcomes and apology are enough (in this case people stepping down) or if they want to take additional steps (in this case they are also going to be a bit more hands on, but there is always the option to de-letter or dis-associate).

used to set alarms for 1-2 hours every 15 min and still groggily adn barely make it out, sometimes i didn't
breakfast toast and butter and jam and tea and pills and drops and brush teeth and hair and get dressed
no time to brush mouthguard though or do dishwasher emppty/refull :( how was i so on the ball day 1?
worked 10-12
now it's 12:30 and i've been blogging and financing instead of eating lunch, gotta fix that
work again at 1
tonight is the roast i hope it'll have been on 30 hours
need to find time to roast teh caarrots and potatoes and peel the potatoes sigh
If i keep this schedule i need to learn to prepare meals in advance on weekend or something which means i need more weekend time
FML why hasn't automation made for shorter weeks like 32 hours? 3 day weekends

Oct. 4th, 2021 12:28 pmtime shift experiment day 1
woke up before alarm (11am)
stayed in bed until alarm (11:30)
got my nook points and checked emails (personal)
got out of bed, not too sleepy after 15 min
made tea
made toast with jam and butter
brushed hair
brushed teeth
got dressed
unloaded the dishwasher partially
took eye drops
took some pills
turned on daylight lamp
TDI meeting with sponsor (12-1230)
banana'd bun
brushed mouthguard
took more pills
listening to some on-demand GHC talks so i can knock them out
got through all but 1 personal email
started updating personal laptop (patch day)
felling productive (personally)
signed up for a lunch club
i like it so far but we'll see
update:
morning work (2-5) was productive IMO but 100% email based b/c was behind from GHC the prior week
worked until 5
made dinner (pizza)
ate dinner with family
alarm went off (1900) and i went back to desk for friendly zoom (late)
then working
hit a wall after an hour and did the trash
then another work thing
another wall
we'll see how the week goes however lots of people have ended up with me having "early" meetings which screws with things *sigh*
but it seems i might need to shift up by an hour or so? idk tbd but this morning was super great

Your burnout risk is HIGH
It’s likely this is negatively impacting your job performance, productivity, and creativity. It also implies risks for your physical and mental health, and could affect your social relationships. If it feels overwhelming, talk to a professional.
To improve your risk level, we recommend you to focus on the factors: Cynicism and Depersonalization.

Day 1
Day 2
https://www.doyou10q.com/
Day 1
1. Describe a significant experience that has happened in the past year. How did it affect you? Are you grateful? Relieved? Resentful? Inspired?
I negotiated for and rejected a job offer. That way insanely stressful not sure I ever want to do that again. I also finally got to see my parents and some of my partners after a year apart.
Since I rejected it I'm not sure it affected me much but I was relieved when it was over.
Supplemental Question: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, what do you find yourself reassessing in terms of the future? (For example: personal relationships, your relationship with money, with work, with technology, the media, body image, with your kids, family members).
I'm not sure that I've reassessed anything.Day 2
2. Is there something that you wish you had done differently this past year? Alternatively, is there something you're especially proud of from this past year?
I'm glad I took time off to be less burned out over the holidays so I took a month off and then I took off Fridays off for the next two months it definitely helped I also got a career coach and a therapist.
Still not sure what I want to be when I grow up but hopefully a better idea of what to ask in interviews.
I started off the pandemic social but just lost it as time went on. I am so exhausted all the time.
Day 3
Day 4
Day 5
Day 6
Day 7
Day 8
Day 9
Day 10
Day 3
3. Think about a major milestone that happened with your family this past year. How has this affected you?
Mom keeps kicking Sammy out of the house but it doesn't really affect me directly. It has been stressing Mom and Dad out though. Mom and I are pretty much waiting for her to be dead and considered walking Dead at this point.Day 4
4. Describe an event in the world that has impacted you this year. How? Why?
I mean covid still happening. Also there's droughts and fires and hurricanes and record heat waves and all of the other fun stuff again including New Orleans drowning again. And nothing did come of BLM we're still murdering people all the time cuz we're assholes. At least we got rid of trump but I don't think that was this year maybe it was this year it was.Day 5
5. Have you had any particularly spiritual experiences this past year? How has this experience affected you? "Spiritual" can be broadly defined to include secular spiritual experiences: artistic, cultural, and so forth.
I haven't really left the damn house so no.Day 6
6. Describe one thing you'd like to achieve by this time next year. Why is this important to you?
Ideally I would like to have lost weight so I fit my clothes again.Day 7
7. How would you like to improve yourself and your life next year? Is there a piece of advice or counsel you received in the past year that could guide you?
Hopefully either my job sucks less or I find a new job and we get the stupid crack in the foundation fixed.
All of the suggestions from therapists and better boundaries and zone and so far they're great ideas at some point I should work on that.
Day 8
8. Is there something (a person, a cause, an idea) that you want to investigate more fully in the coming year?
Some of the TV shows I've downloaded like bigtopia because I'm like 5 years behind it this point. Or maybe read all the business books that I got on I don't even know what but there were lots of things I wanted to learn and I have the books and I should read them.Day 9
9. What is a fear that you have and how has it limited you? How do you plan on letting it go or overcoming it in the coming year?
I am risk averse and don't want to lose the nice unlimited PTO and flexible schedule that I have so it's affecting me because I'm more reluctant to take jobs where I'm not sure they're going to be better but that seems like a reasonable thing so I'm not sure that I'm planning to let that go or overcome it.Day 10
10. When September 2022 rolls around and you receive your answers to your 10Q questions, how do you think you'll feel? What do you think/hope might be different about your life and where you're at as a result of thinking about and answering these questions?
I think I'll be surprised that a year is over again.
Hopefully I will have a new job or my job will suck less.
Hopefully I will answer all of the questions before the last day so that I can actually go through my calendar in more detail and then maybe decide to change my mind 2 Days later.
Probably depressed nothing really got better again on the whole.
BONUS
What are your predictions for the coming year?
I don't know it's been so wild, I just don't know, more lockdowns, more death, more global warming, record-setting fires, hurricanes, heat waves and other events :(

Sep. 29th, 2021 08:28 amI forget i have a disability frequently
I've always lived this way
But sometimes things happen and i'm reminded and I realize I am at a disadvantage.
I was at Disneyland, in indoor lines, and I couldn't see
the lighting was dim / ambient
I could NOT see - i was gripping the handrails worried the path would turn, or i would bump into people
it was frustrating and disorienting
because i worried i could get hurt
but also because i know they well decorate these areas for atmosphere and I was missing out on that
I ended up having to use my partner, Zach, as a seeing eye guide
https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/blind/adjustment/dos-donts.htm#:~:text=DO%20allow%20the%20person%20you,of%20a%20flight%20of%20stairs.
I didn't realize it wasn't the same for everyone until I asked him finally toward day end "can you see" and he said yes and i was like "really? like you can see the people and walkway?" and he was like "yeah it's dim but i can see everything"
I am grateful he was there
but it reminds me when my other partner jokes how bright the house is since i moved in (i made him add many lights) it's because otherwise the place is very very dark to me, yet he is light sensitive
i don't like being reminded and am privileged I can often forget (and mostly other just suffer when they borrow my sighted guns)

May. 17th, 2021 03:28 pm Things trying
hard work boundaries
1 hour email, 1 hour slack, 1 hour to-dos
1 hour lunch away from desk
30 minutes outside (walk, pokemon) - need to add a non tech few moments
4 elements exercise (breathing/mediation) to start and end day and if upset https://amazonv.dreamwidth.org/1217593.html
Check for hot thoughts (look for willfullness) and break them down https://amazonv.dreamwidth.org/1217833.html
See if i can change my feelings (don't tamp, can store/contain if needed)
Daily notes on important things (headache, mood, did i do my outside etc, how well did i sleep etc) was going to get back into fitbit but can't seem to pair mine :( is there a customizeable app that can promptme each day if i went outside yet etc?
Trying to weekly self-care (D&D) may try and also add beauty again?
