 #AllRemote #WorkFromHome #WFH #RemoteWork

Preface: Everyone is different, what works for me may not work for you, read as much about various people's all remote work tips and use what works for you, and toss the rest!

I have been doing this since about 2012

and had intermittent work not in an office before that (plus 24/7 on call etc)

Scenario: Working from home

Both my husband and I are All remote (100% remote)
I have an office, he works in the livingroom or bedroom

I have the following work readme - https://gitlab.com/NicoleSchwartz/readme/-/blob/master/README.md these are common at my workplace

I have the following equipment - https://gitlab.com/NicoleSchwartz/readme/-/blob/master/office.md

I have an ikea desk and a padded office chair, i really want to upgrade to a sit-stand desk and herman miller chair.

A typical day:

I roll out of bed after i snooze my alarm a dozen times, i HATE morning but i'm nearly west coast and everyone books early morning meetings for me

I feed the cat, and heat water to make oatmeal and tea

i eat a banana and give the rabbit a bit

I put on a robe and pin up my hair, yes I have been naked until now

I scramble to find my headset and dial in for my first video conference meeting

No i have not yet brushed my teeth or taken my drugs or showered

I don't believe in faking a commute as suggested by some (walking around the block or house) but if that works for you great!

i also don't believe in getting dressed

I have a bunch of meetings

9/10 am rolls around and when i get a break i medicate the cat, and myself, and feed the cat again, i also try to brush my teeth and brush my hair if i get the chance

back to meetings!

I have tea (i have a https://www.zojirushi.com/app/product/cdjwc ) all day, just keep refilling

Lunch rolls around, i know because i have a calendar reminder, otherwise i would forget until i got hangry

I medicate the cat, feed the cat, feed me, shower, brush my teeth if i haven't already, and get dressed. often lunch is leftovers from dinner the night before, otherwise it's a sandwich or more oatmeal.

Once a day, ish, i have coffee chats https://about.gitlab.com/company/culture/all-remote/informal-communication/#coffee-chats which are with co-workers but not about work

meetings, work, and usually i listen to music when i don't have meetings

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqK33rQfjEA&t=692s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_hUPEOlFYs

I tend to snack in the afternoons, i avoid having snacks so i don't snack all the time. I keep things I have to cook.

I have a reminder if i am in charge of making dinner to stop work and make dinner

Otherwise just a reminder for dinner if my husband or in-laws are cooking

After work i usually then work on Diana Initiative https://www.dianainitiative.org/ stuff, if i get free time i play D&D or goto YEGSEC https://www.yegsec.ca/ meetups being forced to get out of the house is VERY important. Once a week i have a date night with my husband, we might just watch TV or a movie or play a game.

I have a calendar reminder of when to go to bed as well

Scenario: Working while traveling

it changes up some when I am not at home

I wake up, shower, get dressed, get hotel breakfast and caffeine, take pills
brush teeth
start working
video calls until lunch
go our somewhere for lunch
block off afternoon to explore, and dinner
head back to hotel, or new hotel, to do the rest of my work day after dinner
try to get to bed at a reasonable time

i don't get to work on my non profit or anything else on travel days.

In retrospect

Get a lease or get as PRIMARY on a utility before you even move if possible, while in the USA

get PR card

export the car from USA

Import car to canada

Get SIN

Get drivers license

Get car insurance

get healthcare

do car inspections

register and license plate car

easier said than done because with so much in motion it's so hard
amazonv: (Default)
After getting a drivers license -

I was able to apply for provincial healthcare as a spouse and that was easy (not sure how hard it would have been if i were not married)
amazonv: (Default)
So i needed a drivers license for various reasons

I had a HELL of a time proving i was not homeless so that I could get a drivers license

I needed the drivers license in order to get car insurance and provincial healthcare

I was living with my husband, he bought the house before we got married

They wanted a lease or my name on a mortgage, i had neither

They wanted my name on a utility, we had added me as a second person to all utilities but they were not mailed to me i was just authorized

they wanted a MAILED bank statement - but all my bank statements were electronic.
I printed a statement with my address, it was not accepted.
I went to my branch they printed a statement and stamped it, it was not accepted because it was not mailed

They wanted a note from my employer, MAILED to me, confirming my address
My employer could do this by email, because we are ALL remote (100%) with no offices, but they wanted snail mail, even my pay stubs are electronic!

in the end, my husband removed himself from a utility, transfered it to me, we got a statement, and used that, and he's secondary.

it was INSANE
amazonv: (Default)
Car insurance

In order to get car insurance I first needed a drivers license - https://amazonv.dreamwidth.org/1193997.html

Once i did that

To get car insurance i needed to pay the USA DMV for a driving record report (had to have date of first issued license etc) and I had to get a statement from my current car insurance provider (a summary?)

So we got insurance for the car, yea!
amazonv: (Default)
OK importing my car was a clusterfuck

Luckily I had autoimportusa.com to walk me through

First I had to PAY OFF MY LOAN - if your car is not yours, free and clear, forget it

I tried, canada won't accept a close ended letter - so chase who i had my loan with would write me permission to export/import on the dates of my loan (through the end date) but not indefinite, and canada would not accept something with an end date, so ended up having to pay off my car.

Then I had to get my original title

Next, go to https://www.riv.ca/ImportingAVehicle.aspx RIV

I followed their instructions and got a form K-22 by email, which apparently EVERYWHERE is called "form 1" or "form-1" but on it it says K-22 and even after emailing RIV for help they were no help at all, I was terrified the entire time i had the wrong form

Nov 17

Cross border from Canada into USA

Email andrew@autoimportusa.com to confirm I was in USA

Nov 18

First thing in the morning Andrew looks for my email, then submits paperwork to Customs

Andrew then later in the day got emails back and forward me and email with 3 attachments

1. ITN
2. Email Approval
3. Receipt

I print those first 2 attachments (skip receipt) at the hotel i was staying in

I has to stay 72 hours in the USA to export my car

Nov 21

Paperwork to have on me
-PR Card
-Passport
-Drivers License
-Proof of address?
-Original Title
-Printed clear recall notice (from subaru USA website, recent)
-RIV paperwork (K-22 / Form 1)
-ITN - print attachment from email
-Email Approval - print attachment from email
-USA Auto Insurance policy (Active through December)
-bill of sale THIS WAS A BITCH, like who the hell keeps this? Luckily my car dealer had scanned it and i had an electronic copy
-KBB value
-Form-1 (K-22)

Head to SweetGrass Port - pull over to US side before canada border crossing

They will check my car matches the title, and I have paperwork (above) and stamp title “export”

This was pretty quick, it also was a very tiny sign and no clear place to park so that was stressful

Then I headed to Canada border crossing, Coutts (705)

Inform them I am importing the car, I had to then pull over into a parking lot and go inside to a office building

I gave them all my paperwork and sat down, i had to get up and answer questions a few times

In theory I I would pay 6.1% Duty + 5% GST, but each human gets 1 - once a lifetime free import of goods to become a settler and this was mine.

I just handed them a folder of stuff, they did stuff, stamped things, and then i left

----

Within 45 days of import - submit my Form 1 (i submitted payment and no recall paperwork and copy of title) to them I get a form 2.

I was supposed to get confirmation from RIV - they didn't specify by snail mail or email or what

we waited and waited

nothing

we called

apparently we needed to login (no notification!) to the online riv account and download the. form

---------

So, in alberta, next was so go to local registry to get the form to do the inspection

Go to a place to get the out of province inspection “The process will vary from Province to Province but in Alberta I needed to visit my Registry first and pay a $10 fee for an Out of Province inspection form.  They wanted my bill of sale, US title document and drivers license.” https://www.urtech.ca/2019/06/solved-how-to-import-a-vehicle-from-the-us-to-canada-in-4-steps/

We paid like $20 and it was fast at canadian tire

they also didn't do appointments it was just go in early in the day and hope.

They then submit the paperwork for out of country inspection back to RIV (by fax??)

----

A sticker arrived in the mail from RIV I had to apply to my car proving it was compliant, we did

----

next was get province inspection, for which i needed canadian car insurance

To get car insurance i needed a driver's license - read about that here- https://amazonv.dreamwidth.org/1193754.html

Car insurance - read about that here: https://amazonv.dreamwidth.org/1193754.html

Note i tried to do this backwards because nothing was clear about pre-requisties so it was painful.

Went to subaru dealer, with an appointment

That worked, it passed

-----

Next was getting registration and plates, we went the same day it passed inspection

again we brought the giant folder of paperwork, and hoped it was enough

it was

we got it!
amazonv: (Default)
trying to import my car, get it insured and registered

apparently i have to EXPORT it from USA before i can import it so i will be taking a trip down to montana

Insurance here wants some kind of summary from my current insurance about how many claims and how long i've been with them but i can't seem to find or get a report like that

Drivers license wants the date i was first ever issued a license, that cost me around 30$ to pull records from a few state DMVs
amazonv: (Default)
 October 8th

PR card arrived!

I took my new PR card and got my SIN
that was actually very easy
I went to a "service canada office" http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/tbsc-fsco/sc-hme.jsp?lang=eng with my PR card and passport and they issued it that day

we next tried to get onto alberta health
that didn't work as i needed a lease or utility bill to prove residency

next we tried alberta health with a marriage certificate, SIN, and stamped at bank that day bank statement and my husband with a utility bill in his name, still no good.

so fristrating
amazonv: (Default)
Still waiting on my PR card

i think i get my SIN after i get my PR card? I think i may need to apply in person, but i don't know

Also running into problems with . my car

apparently i nee to EXPORT it before i import it, and it has to be notified 72 hours in advance?

and still trying to sort out moving my stuff

and then to sort out healthcaree

sigh

having issues getting work contract because no SIN yet
amazonv: (Default)
 September 18

Flew into edmonton

when in nexus lane i explained i had certificate of landing and they directed me to a room

i waited a few minutes

then i talked to an officer

i explained i had no kids, and re-answered all the questions, and said where i was going to live and the address to mail the PR card

It was auctually very similar to a normal border entry interview and didn't take very long

he checked and stamped my passport then welcomed me to canada!

I was pretty stressed beause i didn't know what would happen but it was very easy he asked me the questions on the landing CoPR again and the address and really that was it.
amazonv: (Default)
August 21

Next

In the envelope (prepaid) I mailed I was returned a "CoPR" Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)

4 pages of instructions

I was instructed to DO
 NOT SIGN until I landed

It had a date I had to land in canada by (Sept 25) and they could not extend this date

I had no idea what to expect or do

I also freaked out because after landing I had to travel more for work and things, and there is a number of days between when you land and when you get your PR (perminant resident) card

My lawyers confirmed that I could leave the country no problem

getting back in had to be by land (car) non-commerical (drive myself) which actually worked out well

Free MBA?

No you can't get a certified MBA (degree, certificate) free online, but you can certainly learn the same things as an MBA program for free if you are self directed and can keep yourself on track

So, go find a college (or two) and look at their MBA curriculum

Example:

Harvard MBA
https://www.hbs.edu/mba/academic-experience/curriculum/Pages/default.aspxFinance 1 (FIN1)

Year One
Financial Reporting and Control (FRC)
Leadership & Organizational Behavior (LEAD)
Marketing
Technology & Operations Management (TOM)
Short Intensive Programs (SIPs)
Business, Government, and the International Economy (BGIE)
Strategy (STRAT)
The Entrepreneurial Manager (TEM)
Finance 2 (FIN2)
Leadership and Corporate Accountability (LCA)
FIELD Global Immersion (FGI)

Year Two
During the second year, students choose from an unparalleled range of elective courses to build on the basic concepts developed in the Required Curriculum. This portion of the program enables students to integrate the functional skills learned in the first year into an understanding of the firm as a total enterprise.

Students may take any combination of courses—up to five courses per semester—and also have the opportunity to cross-register for courses in other select graduate programs.

During the winter term, choose from an array of courses spanning topics from corporate board leadership to reimagining capitalism and authentic leadership development to managing global health. You also have the opportunity to participate in Immersive Field Course (IFC).

University of Alberta
https://www.ualberta.ca/business/programs/mba/curriculum/courses-and-electives.html

Required Courses
BUEC 542 - International Business
OM 502 - Operations Management
SMO 502 - Organization Strategy / Managing Organizations
ACCTG 501 - Introduction to Financial Reporting and Analysis

FIN 502 - Introduction to Financial Valuation
FIN 503 - Introduction to Corporate Finance
MGTSC 501 - Data Analysis and Decision Making
MARK 502 - Principles of Marketing Management
SMO 500 - Managing People
SMO 652 - Leadership Skills

Noticing some themes?

Accounting (Business Accounting)
Finance (not the same)
ethics
Being a manager
Decision Making

etc

So next

find books (to rent from library, or obtain other ways), online articles, and online classes (ideally free) on these topics. Get involved in slacks/discords/etc for people interested in this topic and read articles they post

it won't give you the title "MBA" which is useful for getting into positions, but honestly having got my MBA i think you can learn these things on your own and be fine.

to me, personally, the thing i found most valuable was i learned a little bit about EVERY part of the business, so when working with other teams i could understand (at a high level) where they were coming from.

I took:
-law
-accounting
-marketing
-presentations
-ethics
-business operations
-management skills
-six sigma / project management
-economics
-statistics
-international business relations
-IT

This other blog also has some ideas using the free classes some schools make available

then we had to take a selfie, i'm open and share a lot but actually this is starting to rub me the wrong way "New team member: Take a selfie in your new home office or workspace and add it to the "New Hire Tweets" and add your twitter handle next to your image if you have one."
like i can't tell if it's optional or not but there is a lot of linking my personal social media to work accounts, on my business cards, on my profile, etc. Actually starting to feel a little weird about that, I usually don't mind it being a quick search but making it one click....

"New team member: Connect with GitLab's social media sites: LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube."

see what i mean?

Day 2

I woke up early to hopefully get some of the issues I was having on day 1 resolved.

I posted some questions in chat right after waking up and a few people jumped in right away to assist! I thought I might have time to reach breakfast, nope.

So many meetings, and two in a row of all the new people introducing ourselves which seemed slightly repetitive (it was a timing thing).

4 real meetings and 2 social meetings. They believe in having social meetings with your team and not your team because of the 100% remote model. It seems like a fun way to socialize.

I completed my sexual harassment / hostile work environment annual training, actually not bad as far as those go.

I submitted 2 MRs in order to clarify on-boarding things and hopefully make future people's times a little easier. One was just a bad link (data had moved). I did that with the help of my on-boarding buddy.

I am working a little late in order to try and catch up.

Maybe almost caught up, some items are blocked and not counting those, and some items I will need to redo when I get the company laptop.

Note:
  • So far I have been getting up way earlier than I want or have as my planned work day, hopefully after things get settled I can shift this.
  • I have been wearing real clothes, I don't have many PJs here, I hope shifting to PJs in the future will be fine.
  • I know I need a new desk, preferably sit/stand
  • I know I need a new chair, a good one
  • I think I need a web cam (external)
  • I need a whiteboard
  • I need doodle space and perhaps a digital doodle pad that can get digitized as an image / OCR or maybe just notepads and pictures with my phone.
  • I need a better, ergonomic, keyboard
  • I need a really nice ANC and mic headset
