So you need to do hacker summer camp on the cheap - some advice

I assume you have read https://sites.google.com/site/amazonv/first-conference?authuser=0

and https://hackersummercamp.guide/

next up

i won't cover getting there, tons of sites on that

so you are there

Pack

Water bottle (that can handle hot water for tea)
laundry pods or strips
maybe a plastic bowl and silverwear (or thift whatever)
maybe a water heater (can use coffee maker in many rooms)
flask & funnel
comfy backpack
comfy shoes

Carry on only

you can do laundry at some hotels (like tuscany!) inexpensively, you need US quarters and soap - pack some pods or strips in a ziplock in your luggage! now you can do carry on (it needs to be in your liquids thing) also it's hot if you have light clothes you can dry them out without paying for the dryer

you do NOT want to pay for their laundry soap so expensive

Also a lot of events have / sell shirts - and if you volunteer or speak you may get one, or maybe you plan to buy one (budget for it) but you may not need as many shirts as you thought

Hotel

Shop around for a cheap room

check if you can use the monorail or bus to get from the hotel to event

if you need to taxi, factor that in, you also then need to carry everything with you always, better if you can walk or monorail!

walking in vegas is hot more than 10-15 min sucks, avoid it.

don't forget to include the back and forth of the transport against the price of the hotel

also consider finding out who locally is going, make a friend, have a roomie and split the bill (i have done it!)

Food

pay for the taxi to go to a grocery store on arrival, not the on strip hotel or convenience stores

grab food you don't need to refrigerate! (unless you luck out and are in the tuscany or something and have a fridge) - i recommend if you have a water heater in the room (or pack a camping one!) oatmeal or cereal with powdered milk.

think of it like camping.

You can often use the coffee machine to just heat the water for soup, oatmeal etc.

get creative - i like soylent and mix single servings in water in a shaker bottle

you can pickup a cheap bowl and silverwear at the dollar store - reusable is cheaper and wash it in the sink

ok let's assume you purchased breakfast, and snacks

how hungry do you get, can you snack (nuts, etc.) and just do one large dinner? i can, some can't - if you have to buy lunch you are stuck, htels have you - look for grab and go food courts for best price value and speed

ok now it's dinner

get off the strip! cheaper and better food

or go all in on a buffet if you can get your money's worth

don't drink

what?

yeah don't drink (alcohol)

unless you can buy a bottle and pack a flask, the prices in vegas are high, stick to the free water or buy gallons (have a water bottle! buy a few gallons of water!)

or find vendor parties - get in and get free drinks

good youtubes to find free or cheap activities and food

https://www.youtube.com/c/TravelRuby

Example shopping list for me: (1 week in vegas)
-red bull
-scotch
-trail mix / nuts / granola
-protein bars
-soylent / meal powder = lunch
-oatmeal, instant = or cereal not both
-bread (muffins, croissant)
-2 gallons of water
-tea (dry)
-powdered milk
-jerky

things i have done in the past but don't anymore
PB
bread
apples (cutting the apples was hard)
honey
fluff

make sandwiches!

you can also buy single serve tuna now, but it's messy to snack / make sandwich with but maybe you will have better luck
