Jul. 11th, 2013 08:09 amThere has been large amounts of research performed
starting at a young age and continuing on there are biases against females doing certain things (IT being one) and males doing others (nurturing roles like nursing)
it continues into college where there are proven biases against accepting and educating and grading women versus men - i only concentrated on studies about women so i am sure men get their share of shit, but within IT and management women of equal or greater skill get chosen less, graded more poorly
then hiring! blind tests done, equally skilled women get picked less for same positions and get paid less automatically.
after hiring women get less raises, promotions, accolades then men.
there are ways to educate people and setup systems so these biases are reduced if not eliminated but the culture and society, and HR resist them or are unaware
no, the # ratio is NOT off purely because girls don't want to bee in in infosec, IT, STEM etc
it would be great if it were not scientifically provable! but it is
in regards to con talks, i have not seen specific studies but based on the prior unintentional bias of equally qualified persons unless CFP's are setup in a very blind/neutral way i feel there probably are 3 bias - 1 self selecting girls are afraid of cons (see con harassment etc) and avoid applying 2-unintentional bias of selectors 3-compounded by all prior factors meaning there is a much smaller pool to start with
I could rant more but i don't need to get murderous in the morning
Worst part is after reading all these studies and going on a tear about it a few years back, people i tough were my friends blatantly dis-believed anti female bias etc
it is present, gaming, school, hiring, pay, etc. (in my research in STEM in the US and UK)
however all the people censoring (ADA), whining, or otherwise not doing research or attempting to have constructive conversations, or helping or trying to change the system SUCK
