Q: Describe an event in the world that has impacted you this year. How? Why?

We are still in Iraq and Afghanistan and now want to bomb Syria
the Russians get the Olympics but are trying to jail and take gay peoples children
Manning was not protected as a whileblower but is going to prison
Snowden is seeking asylum and proving hackers aren't crazy the government really is tapping adn recording and storing everything
Some rapists get 30 days in prison when the two above would be in jail for years
it is more publicly known that women are being raped, burned alove and abused daily in places like india, yet not a huge fuss is made about daily rape and abuse in the US
So much of the world is in recession and protesting
everything is such a mess (egypt, north korea, etc)
yet we keep letting the government "protect us" (no real positive side) with the TSA and wiretapping etc - it didn't stop boston, it didn't find boston bomber...
new pope has been interesting, more liberal than others
also interesting the other pope stepped down and didn't die his way out of office
connect gunman in a school again, fuck gun free zones
why is Guantanamo still open?
obama reelected
doma shot down

a mix of good, status quo, bad, and depressing

Worldwide protests, riots, debt crisis
Curiosity on mars
CERN Higgs Boson

Terrifying and exciting year overall
The worlds trouble make me believe my choice (and inability) to bring children into the world is a good thing
At the same time there is cool science happening!
Still, being a self absorbed person most of the time i just am worried about me, not the world

A: Honestly I do not watch the news much since I do not have a TV. What I have heard had mostly been a high number of natural disasters (earthquakes, flooding), the aftermath of those (the leaking nuclear plant). The rest of what I hear is the fighting over the economy, politicians fight about what to cut, what not to cut, while so many people are out of work, and are looking. Overall i just am finding the world a scary place, one I do not wish to bring children or animals or anything into. I wish we knew the right answers to get out of this global mess, but more so I wish people would think more about what they are doing and the impact it will have, and be good people. How much of the housing mess would have been avoided if people really thought about what they were doing?

Q: Have you had any particularly spiritual experiences this past year? How has this experience affected you? "Spiritual" can be broadly defined to include secular spiritual experiences: artistic, cultural, and so forth.

A: Not so sure about spiritual, but I have been thoroughly enjoying becoming a part of the tea community, there is so much to learn about tea, and everyone in the industry is nice and helpful. I have also done more traveling than ever in search of new teas, there are many places I would not have visited or seen, friends I would not have made, had I not been seeking out a wonderful cup of tea.

As I do every year, stealing a new year post from a friend

"One of the most important parts of the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is that you reflect over the past year, and you attempt to (A) accept and forgive anything that has been done to you, and (B) apologize and ask forgiveness for anything you have done to others.

Anonymous is enabled, and all comments are screened. If I've done anything to hurt you this year, let me know. If there's anything you think I might still be upset over, let me know that too, so that I can reassure you that I'm not. I won't unscreen unless you specifically request I do- or, well, I'll reply, but then I will re-screen immediately. (Er, if it's anon, I do not know if that's possible? But yes. I will try!) The goal isn't to start fresh- that's often not possible- but to acknowledge what has happened over this year (or any previous time, if you so choose) as an attempt to not have it happen again.

I promise to treat anything you say seriously and respectfully, and I will seriously be considering it over the next week, leading into Yom Kippur."
